I could feel it coming.  Not long to wait.

I stood, my feet sinking into the soft sand, grains filling the crevices between my toes.  I closed my eyes and drew in a long, deep breath, savouring the salty air, relishing the feel of the icy breeze as it swept over my bare flesh, caressing every inch of my body.

I spread my arms slightly, turning my palms towards the forthcoming sunrise in a gesture of surrender, welcoming the all-consuming wrath of the morning sun.  Everything was perfect, just as Id imagined, just as Id dreamt for as long as I could remember.

I opened my eyes as the first glimmer of light appeared on the horizon, instantly bathing the ocean in an ethereal orange glow.  Id never seen anything so beautiful, so exquisite, and as more and more light began to chase away the darkness I felt its heat wash over me.

So often Id heard others of my kind talk about the agony brought forth by the sun, but I felt no pain, just a warm embrace as its golden rays washed through me, turning my ancient bones to ash, ending my eternal torment.
